Eighth Day
"Eighth Day" was an all school dance held in the "Old Ladies Gym." First held in 1961, it featured a bohemian theme based on the "beatnik" coffee houses of the late '50s and early '60s. The gym was converted into a coffee house by lowering the ceiling with wires supporting newsprint end rolls. "Guests" were required to take off their shoes and sit on pillows on the floor. Bohemian style clothing was expected, such as sweat shirts, leotards, sandals, shades, berets and goatees.
We need any background information, such as; When was Eight Day first held? Who created it? When did it cease?
If you have any photographs, that would be great.
Memories, great or small, tame or outrageous are welcome.
Memories
"I remember working in the concession area, which was in the basement of the gym. Bernie Brown was in charge and he worked us like galley slaves in a sea of spilled coke and squashed potato chips." Steve England '68
"I remember I did a lot of the artwork for the decorations and tried like hell to grow a beard, although unsuccessful. This was the time of the "beatniks" and we played music of the "beat" era. Some students read beat poetry. After a while, we gave up on the jazz stuff, and went to rock and roll. I did have a great date however!! It was a successful party with almost all the club coming, even Brillo (Dave Todd '63)." Phil Combs '63
