2007 Reunion Report
Our 85th anniversary reunion in August is now in the history books and was a success. Not everyone attended every event, but total attendance was right at 100. That includes 65 members, 7 Club Sweethearts and approximately 30 spouses. Jess Harder, graduating class of 1940, was the most senior member, and the least senior was Conrad Ramirez, class of '99. The attendance roster is below.
Events began Thursday afternoon with a come-and-go reception at our headquarters hotel. Friday night was the anniversary banquet. Charles Chilton, graduating class of '66, was master of ceremonies and Harry Millard, class of '57, was the Chaplain.
Harry read the list of members who passed away since the 2005 reunion. Members from each decade were recognized, and those who graduated in 1950 or before were given the opportunity to make remarks. Each Club Sweetheart present was given an orchid corsage. The evening ended with Circle and Song.
Saturday afternoon we had a luncheon at a local restaurant. John Martin, '68, and Don Angle, '55, gave a presentation on the Phillips wing of the Cherokee Strip Museum, to be built in Enid. Saturday night wound up the GC events with an all-school "after party" following the alumni association banquet.
Via the sale of Gridiron T-shirts and the mystery raffle, we raised just over $300 for the Phillips wing of the museum. Money-wise, we came out okay. The cost of the Thursday reception was donated. The Friday banquet paid for itself. Saturday's luncheon was Dutch-treat. Saturday night was a little short. The organizer over estimated how many would attend and ordered way too much food. Fortunately, a member made a generous donation, and we almost broke even.
Speaking of food, from my perspective, GC has sure changed over the years. We had tea, coffee, soft drinks, bottled water, wine and beer. The two most requested beverages were Diet Coke and white wine - VERY different from the Gridiron I knew from 1964 to 1968!!!
All-in-all, I think the reunion was a huge success. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Lots of old acquaintances were renewed and most "war stories" were only slightly exaggerated!
